The Disability Information Service works closely with both members of the public and other social service organisations. Therefore we have services and support available for all members of the community.

Our office is open to the public and has the following resources available;

  • The Directory of Health and Disability Related Groups in Otago
  • Various newsletters/magazines from sector agencies
  • Books - fiction and non-fiction
  • Reference material - information on a range of disabilities and health related disorders
  • Information on social issues, human rights, services
  • Government documents - policies, discussion documents...
  • Pamphlets - on a range of health and disability issues, services, and more
  • Resource/teaching kits - include activities and information

Internet Access and Links

Our office has a computer designated for public use. The public can access the internet free of charge to search for relevant disability and health related issues on WEKA.

WEKA is a website that provides disability and health related information relevant to any member of the general public: www.weka.net.nz

    

FUNDVIEW - Have you remembered about the Fundview programme when lookng for funding?  This computer database is accesible at our office and also at most local libraries.  it is free to use.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at Disability Information Service

Fieldworkers Network

The fieldworkers Network meetings are for anyone working in the disability field. It is designed to be an opportunity to network with like minded agencies, share ideas, and work collectively on projects. We hold quarterly meetings at which specific topics are addressed. Some of the current members of this group include Epilepsy Otago, Carers Society, Alzheimer's Society, Arthritis NZ, and The Family Network. The meeting dates for 2010 are;

  • 23th February
  • 25th May
  • 24th August
  • 23th November

Introduction from the booklet...

Throughout this booklet we will use the term "NASC" which stands for "Needs Assessment and Service Co-ordination."  Needs Assessment is a process that helps to identify and document your strengths, abilities, needs, and goals while yo have an illness or disability.  Service Co-ordination links supports and services to the needs that are identified in your Needs Assessment.  Confidentiality is an important part of the Needs Assessment process.  this means that no one can discuss the personal details about youor your family without your permission.

Digest Newsletter

We produce a quarterly newsletter that has a mailing list of over 400. We welcome any contributions by way of advertisements, stories, up-coming events and the like. Our goal is to keep the communities of Otago informed so any contribution is free of charge.

Fortnightly Updates

We receive a lot of information from the health and disability sector.  In an attempt to make the process of passing the information on more efficient for everyone, we now send out fortnightly updates via email.  This means that all of the events that come up between issues of the Digest, have a forum to be dispersed.  If you have information you would like sent around our networks or you would like to receive it please contact us

Accessible Buses - Dunedin

As at September 09 there are 51 Superlow, wheelchair accessible buses on Dunedin urban bus routes out of a total peak hour fleet of 59 buses.

Citibus run wheelchair accessible buses on all the following services:

Peninsula Monday to Sunday ~ Port Chalmers, except for Monday Friday, 5.15pm service to Ravensbourne hill streets, and weekday services between 6.30am and 6pm on these routes. ~ Waverley ~ Lookout Point~ Opoho ~ Pine Hill ~ Shiel Hill ~ Corstorphine ~ Balaclava ~ Kenmure ~Wakari/Helensburgh and on City combined route weekday evenings, weekend and public holiday services.

Citibus can be contacted on 474 1669 to find out what routes and times these accessible buses are operating.

Dunedin Passenger Transport (DPT) operate 16 superlow floor buses on all Roslyn, Maori Hill, Prospect Park, Ocean Grove, Garden Village, Bradford,Belleknowes, City Rise, Concord, Kaikorai, University services, and at varyingtimes on Mosgiel, Green Island/Abbotsford/Brighton, Maori Hill, GardenVillage and Ocean Grove routes.

Contact DPT on 474 1669 to find out what routes and times these accessible buses are operating.
